Story

The late 1950s marks the beginning of Matka. Vasu, played by Varun Tej, is a Burmese refugee who arrives in Vizag. He quickly enters the criminal underworld and rises to prominence as a local businessman. However, he is introduced to the game of matka on an unexpected trip to Mumbai. Enticed by it, he brings it to Vizag and quickly rises to the position of Matka king. However, everything that rises in life eventually falls. Vasu experiences the same thing, when the Indian government threatens his Makta empire. The remainder of the narrative focuses on Vasu’s eventual fate and how he rescues his kingdom.

Review

The finest aspect of the movie is Varun Tej’s portrayal of the Matka King. Varun Tej performs very well when he is included in various age groups. However, he is great as the mobster and really shines in the second half. Meenakshi Chaudhary hardly had any scenes, yet even in those few, she leaves an impression.

The film’s second half has respectable emotions and some good drama. Although Naveen Chandra does a great job in his part, more screen time could have been given to his character. The production design is among the most striking features. The historical period is presented in an excellent way using a realistic approach.

Ajay Bhupathi performed his duty well. Well-executed is a scenario in which Varun Tej amputates the hand of a guy who defrauds him in the Matka business. Nora Fatehi succeeds well in her part and receives a good role.

The film’s narrative is one of its main flaws; it is old and boring. Matka is another movie that has a guy who appears out of nowhere, turns into a criminal, rises from poverty to wealth, and makes enemies.

The film’s dreary and uninteresting first half is yet another flaw. Vasu’s transformation from a minor criminal is shown in an uninteresting way. Matka is utterly devoid of the excitement necessary for such movies.

Karuna Kumar, the director, takes a very long time to get into the major plot. Things become predictable right away, even in the second half. The drama is regular and without thrilling shocks, thus there is little interest in the proceedings. The unfortunate thing is that there aren’t any memorable moments that keep you interested through to the very finish.

After a while, the conflict is handled improperly, and the story is flat. Many important characters have unfinished character arcs. Varun Tej’s acting, which is quite genuine, is what keeps the movie moving.

Technical:

As previously said, the film’s production qualities are excellent and give it a genuine feel. The art section deserves praise for their excellent execution of the production design. The music was created by GV Prakash, and his tracks are uninteresting. His BGM, however, is far terrible. He wrote the background music in an uninteresting way, as if he had no interest in the events. Karuna Kumar’s dialogues are excellent. In the first half, about 10 minutes may have been cut off due to poor editing.

Karuna Kumar, the filmmaker, is renowned for using appropriate drama to tell his stories, yet Matka lacks such quality. The film ends on a flat note since the emotions don’t mesh well with the action.

The most annoying aspect of the movie is that two songs are released at the crucial pre-climax and climax scenes, which makes the viewing dull. Karuna Kumar has taken an intriguing plot and might have made it far more exciting, stylish, and dramatic, but instead she makes Matka a complete mess. The sole consolation in the second half is a long discussion that Varun Tej mouths.

Conclusion

Matka offers a few decent thrills here and there, but mostly it’s simply a mediocre film. The narrative is monotonous and completely predictable. The sole redeeming feature of this otherwise unimpressive historical drama is Varun Tej’s heartfelt performance. As you watch the film, do not have high expectations.
