Review
By hiding his name throughout marketing, writer and director Whisky generated a lot of buzz. He keeps the tension high throughout the movie, drawing the viewer into his narrative.
There are other sequences that heighten the tension and mystery of the plot. The strategically placed twists keep viewers interested and create excitement.
The movie, which is mostly set at night, makes use of low-light photography to heighten the tense mood. Here, the team has performed well. With the exception of Ravi Krishna (Virupaksha fame), the most of the performers are up-and-coming, yet they nevertheless provide excellent performances.
For a suspense thriller, a gripping narrative and a well-written script are essential, but The Birthday Boy lacks both. The film falters in the second half, especially in its treatment of the death’s aftermath, despite the director’s best attempts.
The secret is revealed too early in the second half, which is a major mistake, and the emotional parts are unimpressive. It would have been more successful to keep the tension high till the very end. A lot of sequences seem slow and don’t contribute anything to the story as a whole.
The film’s appeal to younger viewers may be limited by some speech that is not suitable for families. Some characters, such as Rajiv Kanakala, don’t add much to the plot, and the conclusion and emotional depth might have been more powerful.

Technical:
Although Whisky is a promising filmmaker, a better storyline and more precise editing in the second part would have made the plot more interesting. A more engaging narrative would have enhanced his vision.
The music heightens the suspense at crucial points, and the photography is stunning. Although the production qualities are good, the editing, particularly in the second half, should be improved.
Conclusion:
The Birthday Boy is a young, suspenseful thriller that only sometimes thrills. The picture is hindered by slow-paced sequences and a dull second half, despite Whisky’s tidy efforts and passable performers. The film’s audience is restricted by its mature language. This weekend, it could be worthwhile to look into other forms of entertainment.
